Trailer Parts Pro Electric Brake Assemblies: A Dexter-Sourced Value Option vs OEM Boxed Brakes

If you're replacing worn-out electric drum brakes on a trailer, you've probably seen the price difference between OEM boxed Dexter brake shoes/assemblies and other options.

At Rodoc, we stock and sell Trailer Parts Pro electric brake assemblies online—these are a Dexter-sourced, more cost-effective aftermarket option that can be a great fit when you want reliable braking performance without paying the premium that often comes with OEM boxed parts.

What are Trailer Parts Pro electric brake assemblies?

Trailer Parts Pro is the label you'll see on our electric brake assemblies. They're built as a solid replacement option for Dexter and Dexter-clone style axles, and they're a practical choice when:

  • Your existing brake shoes are worn, glazed, or contaminated
  • A magnet or adjuster is failing
  • You need a reliable replacement at a better price point than OEM boxed

Why customers choose these over OEM boxed Dexter brake shoes

OEM boxed Dexter parts are a great product—but depending on the repair, the "boxed OEM" route can be more expensive than it needs to be.

Trailer Parts Pro assemblies are popular because they offer:

  • Value: typically a cheaper route than OEM boxed brake shoes/assemblies
  • Compatibility: designed around common Dexter/Dexter-clone axle applications
  • Reliability: Dexter-sourced, so you're not sacrificing quality for price

How to identify the correct electric brake assembly

The key to getting the right brake the first time is measuring your existing setup. Here's the process that narrows it down fastest:

Step 1: Measure the brake diameter

You can measure either the inside diameter (ID) of the hub or the outside diameter (OD) of the brake assembly itself. Common sizes are:

  • 10"
  • 12"
  • 12-1/4"

Step 2: Measure the brake shoe width

Once you have the diameter, measure the width of the brake shoe. Combined with the diameter, this gives you the full brake assembly dimensions (for example, 12-1/4" x 5" or 12-1/4" x 4").

If you have both the diameter and the shoe width, you typically don't need to narrow down by axle capacity — the dimensions will get you to the right assembly.

Step 3: Verify the brake mounting bolt pattern

This is the one spec you still need to confirm even after measuring dimensions. This is the brake mounting bolt pattern on the brake flange — NOT the tire/wheel lug bolt pattern. Common patterns are 4-bolt, 5-bolt, and 7-bolt mounting flanges.

Step 4: Determine left-hand vs right-hand

  • RH (right-hand) = roadside of the trailer
  • LH (left-hand) = curb side of the trailer

You'll need one of each per axle (one LH, one RH).

Quick reference checklist:

Spec How to get it Common values
Brake diameter Measure ID of hub or OD of brake 10", 12", 12-1/4"
Brake shoe width Measure width of shoe 2", 2-1/4", 3", 3-3/8", 4", 5"
Mounting bolt pattern Count bolts on brake flange (not wheel lugs) 4-bolt, 5-bolt, 7-bolt
Side Roadside = RH, curb side = LH LH or RH

If you're unsure, send us your measurements and we'll point you to the right match.
